OK, so several people including my wonderful sister have been asking me about this dress illusion. I'll give you what I'm pretty sure is the correct answer as to why it can be seen as both white/gold and black/blue.First of all there is a psychological phenomenon known as color constancy in which our brain automatically alters our color perception based on ambient lighting. You can see examples of this for yourself when you go to an oddly lit bar and take a photo. When you look at it later the lighting is very off and everything looks weird ... but when you were at the bar it all looked normal. That is because the ambient lighting in the bar is different from your home. However if you take that photo back to the oddly lit bar then it will look normal because you will be back in the ambient lighting that the picture was taken in, and your brain will automatically color adjust.Secondly the photo of the dress that caused this illusion was overexposed. This overexposure adds a yellowish tinge to the entire image. The result is that and area which should have had zero color (black) now how a yellowish/golden tinge and appears gold, and the area which was blue now has an added yellow. But our brains treat blue + yellow as white due to the way our retina processes color through a blue/yellow neural color pathway. So basically depending on the ambient lighting in of where you are viewing the image you may experience the color as blue/black or white/gold. And in some in-between ambient light situations you may even be able to experience it both ways !
